HARMONY HAVEN
by Putrajaya Lake Design Competition 2024
INTRODUCTION
The city of Putrajaya, renowned for its modern architecture, lush green spaces, and vibrant cultural heritage, is an ideal location for innovative placemaking initiatives. This design competition seeks to enhance the area near the Everly Hotel Putrajaya and Putrajaya Lake by creating a dynamic public space that reflects the cultural diversity of Malaysia. Putrajaya Lake, a focal point of Malaysia's administrative capital, is a stunning man-made lake surrounded by lush greenery, iconic architecture, and cultural landmarks. The lake is an integral part of Putrajaya's identity, providing a tranquil environment and a venue for various recreational activities.
This competition invites designers, architects, landscape architects, and urban planners to create a transformative placemaking project that enhances the relationship between the community and the lake through innovative use of hard and soft landscapes.
OBJECTIVES
The goal of this idea competition is to design a masterplan of the area with multifunctional space that incorporates five key building elements: An Amphitheatre, a Kiosk, a Bridge, a Family Outing Area, and a Wedding Reception Hall. The ‘placemaking’ exercise should celebrate Malaysia's rich cultural tapestry, integrating elements from Malay, Chinese, Indian and other local traditions.
DESIGN REQUIREMENT
The goal of the masterplan is to design a public space by the Putrajaya Lake that encourages community interaction and engagement, reflects the cultural and environmental essence of Putrajaya and integrates seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and architecture. The five key building elements in the masterplan are:
1. Amphitheatre for Outdoor Cultural Performances
Purpose: To host cultural performances and events showcasing Malaysian traditions.
Capacity: Designed to accommodate at least 300 spectators.
Design Considerations: The Amphitheatre should incorporate traditional Malay, Chinese, and Indian architectural features. It should be open-air, with natural acoustics enhanced by the surrounding landscape.
2. Kiosk
Purpose: To serve as a multifunctional space for food and beverage sales, souvenirs, or information distribution.
Design Considerations: The Kiosk should be a small, flexible structure that can be easily adapted to different uses. It should reflect the fusion of Malaysian cultures through its design and material choices.
3. Iconic Pedestrian Bridge
Purpose: To connect different parts of the site, providing pedestrian access across Putrajaya Lake.
Design Considerations: The Bridge should be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, serving as a visual landmark. It should incorporate elements of traditional Malaysian craftsmanship, such as intricate carvings or batik patterns.
4. Family Outing Area
Purpose: To provide a safe and engaging space for families to gather, relax, and engage in recreational activities.
Design Considerations: This area should include seating, picnic spots, and children's play zones. The design should be inclusive and cater to families of all sizes, with spaces inspired by the natural environment and cultural elements of Malaysia.
5. Wedding Reception Hall
Purpose: To serve as a venue for weddings and other large social gatherings.
Capacity: The hall should accommodate up to 500 guests.
Design Considerations: The Wedding Reception Hall should be a blend of elegance and cultural richness, incorporating architectural styles from Malay, Chinese, and Indian traditions. It should offer both indoor and outdoor spaces, with views of Putrajaya Lake.
All design elements must thoughtfully integrate Malay, Chinese, Indian and other local cultural aspects. Participants are encouraged to explore the architectural styles that incorporate traditional motifs, materials, and design principles of the Malaysian cultures. Incorporate in the design other artistic elements such as sculptures, murals, or other art forms that represent the cultural diversity of Malaysia.
Designs should prioritize sustainability, utilizing eco-friendly materials and technologies where possible. Innovative solutions that enhance the user experience and promote environmental stewardship are highly encouraged.
